How to Live a Happy Middle Adulthood
Middle adulthood occurs between the ages of 34 and 60. During this time, adults are juggling multiple developmental tasks including managing a career, nurturing relationships, caring for children and parents and managing the household. Struggling with these tasks may lead to depression and anxiety. In addition, physical changes may take place, such as decreased flexibility and strength and increased risk for health problems. Individuals in this age group are at greater risk for heart disease, high blood pressure, obesity and osteoporosis. Despite these challenges, it is possible to have a happy and healthy middle adulthood.
Instructions
- Exercise regularly. Physical fitness may help prevent common health problems from occurring in middle adulthood, and keep you healthier and active longer. Exercise also has emotional benefits such as alleviating stress, anxiety and depression. This occurs in part because of the biological effects of physical activity, but completing fitness goals and observing healthy physical changes promotes a sense of satisfaction.
- Participate in challenging activities. Engaging in these activities helps to alleviate the feeling that life has become stagnant. If there has ever been something that you have always wanted to do, but have never attempted, now is the time to try. Go to college and get a first or additional degree. Start a new business or write a novel. The excitement of participating in something new and challenging may revitalize you and alleviate the feeling of being stuck.
